I thought that the book started out slow, but I hope it will gradually get better with perhaps more action and character development. The father seems more of a mystery figure if anything and a bit of a control freak, however this would make sense if he was a high ranking officer in the military. The mother seems to be a caring woman with a little bit of a temper occasionally. I do wonder if they will ever reveal why Gretel is a "Hopeless case" as they say in the book. I over all thought that the book so far is quite descriptive and interesting ~Chandra
I agree with you. I thought that the book was really slow and descriptive at the beginning, but I like how it gave a lot of details about Bruno. I think that this book will get better and easier to follow along.

I agree, the beginning is quite slow. The book really starts to make sense at the very end. Thats when everything fits into place and you step back and see how big this story really is and how much it tells about that time period. All through the eyes of nine-year old Bruno. I highly recommend this book to all readers.

I have already finished the book and I liked it. I think it was a very good book but the ending was a little bittersweet and kind of sad. I liked the idea of the story though, and the way the author chose to write the book.

When I first began this book, it was hard to continue reading because it was mostly background info and character background. But a couple chapters later the action began to escalate and became easier to read.
